Puffy Eyes(Eye Bags) Causes & Treatment
Dr. Anin Sethi from Mirchias Eye Care Centre, Chandigarh talks about puffy eyes and gives some tips on how to get rid of them. This is a very common problem. Patients come to us complaining about the dark circles and puffiness under their eyes. It is also called ‘bags under the eyes.’
What causes swollen or puffy eyes?
There can be various reasons for puffy eyes. The most common cause seen is old age. Due to old age, the skin gets thin, and the tissues become loose, which leads to swelling. The fat around the eyeball shifts and gathers under the skin. This is how those bags under the eyes are formed. Nothing over the top needs to be done. One can use an ice pack on the swollen area. If the swelling is more in the morning and fluctuating during the day, there can be more than one reason for this. Heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, or any disease which causes accumulation of water. This is not only seen in old-aged people but also in younger people if they suffer from any kidney, liver, or heart disorders.
Other symptoms of swollen eyes
Swollen eyes are common in people with diseases that cause water accumulation. Not only this, but it also causes swollen feet or swelling in any dependent part. If this happens, do consult a doctor. But if there is swelling only in the eye and other things are normal, then it may not be that big of a concern.
What are the preventions and treatments of puffy eyes?
If it is a cosmetic issue, a cosmetic surgeon can help remove the excess skin (only for cosmetic reasons). If young patients are suffering from puffy eyes, they should fix their sleep schedule. One should get 6-8 hours of sleep daily, take a proper diet. And if the eye is itchy along with the bags under the eyes, you should immediately consult an ophthalmologist.
